The Southern Oboe Intensive provides a distinctive opportunity for oboists to spend five days immersed in world-class instruction. The intensive draws students from middle school through college graduates from throughout the United States. During the intensive, students at all levels are coached by James Sullivan (Alabama Symphony), Russ deLuna (San Francisco Symphony) and Phil Ross (St. Louis Symphony). Not only are these gentlemen exceptional oboists, but each brings extraordinary and unique experience and perspective to share with the participants.

- Daily hands-on reed making/reed adjusting workshop with expert instruction and personal attention
- Spiraling curriculum suitable for all playing levels, such as:
- Etude preparation
- Technique and facility, including upper register technique, trill fingerings, harmonic fingerings, etc.
- Techniques for good tone production, intonation and vibrato
- Developing an effective embouchure
- Survey of oboe and English horn repertoire
- Articulation techniques
- Performance technique and practice strategies
- Performance anxiety and stress management
- Structured study will include private lessons, master classes and participation in chamber ensembles
- Special topics courses may include audition preparation, cane selections and preparation and gouging machine instruction and maintenance
- Robert Huffman of Wicked Edge will be in residence throughout the week. Wicked Edge is the leading precision knife sharpening system. Robert will be leading workshops and demonstrations.
